Why we don’t do the “hurricane cut”
You’ll see palms around Lake County stripped down to a few fronds pointing straight up. UF/IFAS research shows that over-pruning weakens palms, slows their growth, and doesn’t make them any safer in a storm. The palm needs its full head of fronds to stay strong.
The rule of thumb is to leave everything above the horizontal line, the 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock position, and only take what’s dead or hanging below it.
Which palms we trim
Sabal (cabbage) palms, queen palms, pygmy date palms, Washingtonias and the other palms common in Mount Dora yards. Tell us roughly how tall each palm is when you ask for a price. Tall ones need different equipment, and we’ll tell you up front if one is out of our range.
When to trim
Once a year is enough for most palms, usually before hurricane season so loose dead fronds aren’t flying around in the first big storm. Queen palms drop fronds and fruit more often and may need a second visit.
