Hollow tines, real plugs: what core aeration does

A core aerator drives hollow tines into the lawn and pulls out plugs of soil, leaving small holes across the turf. Those holes loosen packed ground and let water, air and roots move down instead of sitting on top. The plugs are left on the lawn and break down within a few rains and mowings.

Spike aerators, the kind with solid tines, push soil aside instead of removing it. On already-packed ground that can make compaction worse, which is why we only do core aeration.

Does a Mount Dora lawn need aeration?

Not every one. Mount Dora’s sandy soil drains fast and rarely packs down across a whole yard. It compacts in particular places: where cars park on the grass, along the dog’s path, beside walks, and on lots that were graded with fill when the house was built.

Signs that a spot needs it: water puddles or runs off onto the sidewalk on watering day, a screwdriver is hard to push into moist soil, or the grass is thin along a path no matter what you do. With only one watering day a week, water that runs off is water the lawn never gets.

Aerate while the grass is growing, not in January

Aerate warm-season grass while it is actively growing, from late spring through summer, so it fills the holes in quickly. Avoid winter, when St. Augustine and Bahia are barely growing, and stretches of drought stress. Water on your next regular day afterward.

Flag, mow, aerate, leave the plugs

  • FlagSprinkler heads, shallow lines and lighting cable marked first, so the tines don’t break them.
  • MowThe lawn cut to its normal height so the machine reaches the soil.
  • AerateExtra passes over the compacted areas, lighter coverage where the soil is fine.
  • Leave the plugsThey break down on their own and return soil to the surface.

When sod or shade is the real problem

If a lawn is mostly bare or dead, aeration won’t bring it back. St. Augustine doesn’t grow from seed, so the fix is sod, and we’ll tell you that rather than sell an aeration that can’t help. If the lawn is thin because of oak shade, the problem is light, not soil.

Water puddling or running off on watering day, soil that’s hard to push a screwdriver into when moist, and grass that stays thin along paths or parking spots.
Usually not. The sandy soil here drains well. Most yards only need it in compacted spots, like where cars park or along walkways, and not every year.
No. Leave them on the lawn. They break down within a few rains and mowings.
